Baroness Tessa Blackstone, Chair, Bar Standards Board

Letter of Welcome

Thank you for your interest in the role of lay member of the Bar Standards Board.

This is an important appointment at a crucial time for barristers in England and Wales as the profession responds to the challenges of the health emergency and adapts to changing consumer demands and expectations, technological advances and global competition. The BSB must ensure that its regulation facilitates access to justice for consumers and is risk-based, proportionate and agile. It must continue to play a key role in ensuring that those entering and working in the profession are as diverse as the society they serve.

We are looking for a lay Board member who will work with the Board and executive team to lead the organisation through these challenges.  You must be able to contribute high-level strategic thinking and advice on our approach to delivering the BSB’s regulatory objectives. You will bring a sound understanding of governance, most likely gained in a non-executive capacity, and will bring a range of knowledge, skills and experience from the private, public or third sectors. We have identified a gap in our expertise on the Board around Consumer Affairs, so individuals who can bring senior level leadership experience in this area would be of particular interest.

The BSB is a professional, dynamic and flexible organisation and one which hugely values diversity. We are very keen to encourage and welcome applications to this role from women, black and minority ethnic people and disabled applicants as part of our commitment to the diversity and inclusivity of our board.

We look forward to receiving your application.

Baroness Tessa Blackstone
Chair, The Bar Standards Board
